Green Design Ideas for your Home!

By: Shelly ChenLin

Feel clueless when it comes to making your home green? Well, here are some tips that are amazingly simple and can have a huge impact.

1. Unbottle your creativity!

Believe it or not, useless bottles can become an easy-made attraction: collect bottles of various shapes and sizes as you go along; when you feel you have enough, put them together in a tray in a way that appeals to you and randomly arrange some flowers into the containers. And here is a charming decoration at hand! Don’t be afraid to experiment with this tip in different rooms of the house.

2. Get Crafty!

A friend’s birthday is coming and you still didn’t know what to give as a present? Why not DIY (do-it-yourself), make an eco-friendly notebook using recycled paper and used cardboard. First of all, collect the paper and cut them into equal sizes. Cut two pieces of cardboard out of a used cardboard box (e.g., TV box or shoe box) into a size that is roughly the same as the paper. Decorate the cardboard with your creativity. Bind the cardboard and the paper together using strings or key rings. And you have a perfect warm-hearted gift!

3. Play it up!

Old CDs and DVDs are piling up on your shelves waiting to be disposed? Transform your favourite tunes and movies into an innovative decoration on the wall: collect used CDs and DVDs at home or from your friends and design your own unique pattern for this wall art project.  Show your creative flair, and use the often eye catching designs on each disk to create a focal point.  I’m sure it will become a topic of conversation in your bedroom or living room.

4. Put it to rest not to pasture!

Another tip for going green is to re-use an outgrown sweater or T-shirt and make it your pillow or cushion cover. You can preserve a favourite item or memory, create a discussion piece and be environmentally friendly. Now yes, this does require a little bit of sewing skill. Cut and sew the sweaters and T-shirts into covers that fit your pillows and cushions. You can even decorate them with buttons, or pieces of fabric from other items. Make more than you need and you can rotate or replace the covers to give your house a new look once a while.

These are just a few ideas to inspire you on how to go green at home with style! Not only will you help our environment, you’ll have some great summer activities and new items for your home! The idea is to look at items from a different angle and think about how you can re-use things in a creative way to make an impact –whether it is turning a skateboard into a side table, creating a mosaic from old tiles, remember make it your own and show off your green creative side!
