Coverletter Tips
Things to keep in mind when writing a cover letter
- Do not write “Dear Sir or Madam”. Be sure to find out the name of the manager or person in charge of hiring. Phone the company to find out the manager’s first and last name with the correct spelling.
- You should express in your cover letter why you are submitting a resume to the employer. Be specific and state the job you are applying for. Do you want a full-time, part-time, seasonal or future position? Include the competition number if applicable.
- Mention where you heard about the position. Many companies are now relying on their own employees to refer their qualified friends to open positions. So if you were referred to the job, mention the referral’s name.
- Reflect your qualifications and personality. Use specific examples that you have acquired through your education, work and volunteer experience and life to relate to how you can perform the job. Many skills you have learned in your previous jobs are transferable to the new job.
- Explain any mysteries. If you have left the work force for a long time, explain what you were doing. Were you in school, volunteering or traveling?
- Answer any questions that were specifically requested in the job posting. This can include the shifts you are available to work, availability date, or attached samples of previous work.
- Sign your cover letter. Remember to sign your cover letter using blue or black ink. If you are submitting the cover letter by email, be sure to insert a scanned copy of your signature in the signature area.
- Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Get a friend, relative or a staff member at the Connections Youth Resource Centre to proofread it first.
